Unplugging From the Traditional Business Meeting

Going in a board room may let some feel constrained from allowing all their creative juices to flow. Somehow, it gives out a less good sense, especially when facing another intimidating personality. This traditional way of exchanging thoughts and ideas still does exist as there are instances when there may be a need to point out facts using graphs, etc.

Today’s executives have found a more accessible and unknowingly healthier way to have their meetings. Scientists have proven to be indeed an effective way in enhancing performance at work and at the same time provides some form of exercise while at the office.

Walk the Talk Meeting

Walk the talk is taking the meeting outside for a walk which experts say are potent ways of making individuals more creative. People tend to feel more inspired, more energized, and alert because of the changes in scenery as they walk. It makes people think better and come up with better solutions. This can indeed be a great way of having to get rid of sitting for long hours. Typically, a hardworking executive works between forty-five to forty-eight hours a week. And you could just imagine just how much time he must be sitting on his chair. That does not include the times when he has to meet with other executives after office hours. And when their work is not done for the day, they bring them home and take them another few hours before they can hit the sack. Coming home without any paper works does not stop them from being awake until past midnight. They would be seated for a couple of hours more since some executives would render at least two hours of reading. Researchers have found that sitting for too long may lead to unfavorable conditions like metabolic disorders and obesity. It can heighten blood pressure, increase blood sugar, increase the body fat around the waist, and increase cholesterol levels. It has also been reported to increase the risk of having cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Sitting is Killing You

Anyone who has been in the workforce for quite some time will probably agree to this, as you would often hear them complain. The employee’s back hurts, and they feel that their shoulders have become stiff after a day’s work. Despite knowing the importance of exercise, being a busy executive may not allow you to take an early morning jog because you need to meet influential people at the office. You would also probably want to spend your time with your family after work rather than spend it outside to run or hit the gym. Are they excuses to just keep us from getting fit? Offsetting the damage of long hours of sitting with spending an hour or two at the gym proves nothing.

Moreover, there are ways to prevent us from getting stuck in our office chairs, especially during long meetings. This is why certain offices have adopted a way of having their meeting while walking. People have become more conscious that they are now aware that having 10,000 steps is the minimal standard to help them become fit.

The Rewards of Walk the Talk Meetings

Obviously, walk the talk meetings would not be effective if you talk to different department heads or have a video presentation.

However, suppose the meeting would only involve brainstorming with one or two people. There are benefits of doing so while you walk around the nearby park or around the office building. The benefits include:

Having a collaborative conversation while walking can lead to great solutions, sometimes without realizing it. Encourage the company to get creative about finding time to stand up and start moving. Regardless of how much work you have to do in a day, the need to stretch and make your blood flow usually should always be of importance.

During lunch breaks, we often see employees surf the internet, which should be discouraged. Always consider taking a few minutes of walking up and down the stairs as this helps increase blood flow and prevent one from having varicose veins from prolonged sitting.

The impact of movement can be profound. It can help you burn calories, which can lead to weight loss and increased energy. Additionally, muscle activity can trigger the breakdown of fats and sugars within the body. When you sit, especially for long hours, these processes stall, putting your health at risk. Every little opportunity counts. Think about the health benefits that both employers and employees can have, which can all start with just a few steps.
