While 2020 may have helped so many people realize the need to start their own business. To sustain their needs, not all of those who began their business may have a solid foundation to begin with. This may be brought about by the sudden urge to earn because of the restrictions posed by the government to open offices to comply with health and safety protocols. And yes, we needed to do something on our end to still cope with our everyday needs.
Some may have just thought about starting a business as a “spur of the moment” thing, while others took it as a sign to start a business that would last a long time. These entrepreneurs may have rushed themselves into doing something that failed to see some aspects of building a business. These mistakes are not uncommon since they happen when one does not anticipate that certain things could happen if one is not careful with their decisions. Remember that there are quite a several startups that fail within the first five years of operation. And knowing that this happens, an entrepreneur should be armed with more knowledge on how to sustain the business.

Learn How To Avoid These Mistakes
Yes, nothing is perfect, and we are always bound to commit a mistake. And being an entrepreneur being a risk-taker should be one of our qualities. However, an entrepreneur should be wise enough to reduce the possibility of wasting everything he has worked hard for. Thus, do take note of the following:
- Absence of an actual business model. One can come up with a thousand ideas of what to offer to the market. However, having that in mind is not enough to ensure that your business will prosper. There should be a solid business plan which one should have to act as a guide as he starts his business. Planning is essential because it allows you to foresight everything that needs to be done.
- Absence of market need. You may have thought of a unique product to sell, but without the market condition for it, your business is bound to fail. Before you even focus your mind on a particular product to sell, do market research on what is really needed and in demand. From there, you can make these products more appealing than what your competitors are offering.
- Insufficient financial planning and management. You must have a competitive price without sacrificing the profits of the company. If you charge too high, it may scare your customers away. If your price is too low, you may not be able to earn significant profit to pay your employees, raw materials, and other overhead costs.
- Insufficient funds to run the business. One mistake of entrepreneurs is that they use their profits to use for their personal needs without doing the Math. What I mean is, being the owner of the business, of course, you also need to have a piece of the company’s earnings. However, you should set a specific percentage of how much you should have each month. Rather than just use all the money without too much thought to the needs of the business. No matter how small your business is, the funds should be intact. Unless you decide to have an investor to increase your resources, your business will just fail due to a lack of sufficient funds to keep the business going.
- Creating the wrong team. You can’t run a business on your own. So, some start with having family members to help start the business. However, a problem ensues when a specific individual may not function as expected. Thus, it is important to carefully choose who to assign to a post. This goes the same with hiring employees. Some may approach you and ask a favor to give their son, daughter, nephew, or niece a job. While you wouldn’t want to hurt your friend’s feelings, it is still best to allow a particular time to evaluate the individual’s performance before hiring. You can’t get employees out of pity. You need to have a strong team that will help you reach your goals for the business.
- Insufficient or poor marketing strategies. The internet has become an essential tool in every business. A product gets its way to people by providing excellent marketing strategies that quickly encourage customers to buy. And having great marketing ideas can just make customers flock to your store. Examples of creative ways to increase your customer base are an online contest, loyalty program, and referral program. Make these as exciting as you can so your loyal customers can encourage their friends and families to try your products, as well.
- Loss of focus. So, I know some entrepreneurs who have made their startups successful in just a few months. They feel the need to step up by either opening it for a franchise or to start another business. While the goal of increasing their chances for a higher profit may be excellent, it may be too early to be jumping on another business. I suggest giving it a little more time to focus on the existing business, strengthen the team, and maintain the momentum.
- Overlooked Legal Issues. Every business must come out unique- from the company’s name, the branding, etc. Copyright infringement is one severe matter. Before starting the business, ensure that you have all the necessary legal issues settled and that you are not precisely duplicating another company. Also, all the required paperwork to do your business up and running should be taken care of to avoid interruptions later on.
One may seem to have a perfect plan to start a business. Still, some minor details can be discounted, affecting your business. Be sure to have the right level of planning. Thorough research and self-awareness so that you can identify the weaknesses that can put a dent in your business before it creates havoc.
