Refueling Your Energy To Elude Burnout

Starting up a business may infuse so much energy and enthusiasm to any entrepreneur. The day-to-day work may not be much of a trouble. It should not be perceived negatively. After all, starting up a business means a lot of work and definitely needs most of your time. Despite hiring the best employees, an entrepreneur could not just be too complacent with whatever solutions are being made by his appointed decision-makers. Having a business may help you become financially independent, but it also means taking a huge responsibility.

In our fast-paced world, where everyone just seems to be in a hurry or short on time to do things, employees are likely to reach a level where they feel that they are ticking time bombs ready to explode. What makes it even worse is when their superiors put so much pressure on them. Trying to meet unreasonable deadlines or asking to create something almost impossible to do. People work because they need to sustain the needs of their families, and even if they no longer feel happy with their work, they just go on until they give in.

Emotional Labor

An 8-hour job a day may not be enough to finish all tasks, requiring employees to stay a couple more hours at the office. Although there are instances when there is a need to get things done immediately, especially when making a presentation to a client. But if this often happens, the enthusiasm gradually wears out, which results in burnout.

What is burnout? It is sometimes referred to as emotional labor, wherein an individual no longer functions well or performs his job the way he should. This is mainly experienced by high-achievers. They tend to work longer hours and take on an exceedingly tedious workload that puts pressure on them to excel. It is as if there should be no room for a mistake or wasting time.

Burnout is chronic stress that leads to emotional and physical prostration or fatigue. An individual may start to detach himself from others and may feel ineffective in everything he does. This does not come overnight. It slowly creeps up without the individual knowing that he is on the verge of going through this kind of emotional strain.

Signs of Physical and Emotional Collapse

It is best to be able to distinguish stress from burnout. The difference may just depend on the degree. But one should be able to identify the symptoms before it turns into a full-blown burnout.

  1. Insomnia

Insomnia is a kind of sleep disturbance that makes an individual difficult to sleep or stay asleep for a few days a week. Too tired or overthinking can cause this to happen.

  1. Chest pains, palpitations, dizziness, headaches, and gastrointestinal discomfort.
  2. Chronic fatigue

Chronic fatigue manifests as being tired or lacking the energy to work. There is a feeling of being unmotivated and uninspired. The individual may also feel a sense of anxiety or dismay at what lies ahead.

  1. Impaired focus and concentration

The unmotivated individual may tend to slow down in doing the everyday work, which can lead to assignments piling up or becoming forgetful of some details. He may no longer be as efficient as he used to.

  1. Loss of appetite

The appetite may also be affected because of too many things in mind that are going on simultaneously. And with that, the individual may tend to skip meals, thus eventually losing weight.

  1. Anxiety

As the emotional stress escalates, relationships may be affected and may interfere with the work; thus, loss of productivity ensues.

  1. Anger

Such emotional outbursts may be challenging to handle. It is like trying to take out all the stress on somebody that causes serious arguments with people around him.

  1. Anhedonia

It is the loss of the ability to find joy or pleasure from the usual activities.

  1. Isolation

Being with other people is something that an individual will avoid. If someone speaks to him, he would have an aggressive reaction.

  1. Loss of Trust

The individual may find it difficult to see things positively. Those trusting others may also be a huge problem.

  1. Poor performance and Lack of productivity

Despite working for long hours, nothing just seems to be done as they are supposed to. This leads to piling up of work which results from missing deadlines.

  1. Cynicism

The individual may no longer see that something good can happen and that no matter how much effort he puts into his work, it would be unappreciated and worthless.

If you are feeling any of these indicators mentioned above, be very careful and try to assess yourself and find ways to reduce the amount of stress you are having to avoid burnout.

Reigniting the Flame

It is often neglected by workaholics that they also need time to relax and enjoy. We need to feed our minds and soul with something that can help us become productive. Drowning ourselves with too much work may mean additional funds, but sometimes not having the necessary time for ourselves can take a toll on our physical and emotional health.

  1. Write down everything that makes you feel stressed.
  2. Find possible solutions on how you can reduce stress in each situation.
  3. You can only do so much. Learn to refuse any additional commitments.
  4. If there are people available to help you, delegate tasks. No matter how slow they can be, just tell them to ensure they can do their work correctly.
  5. Give yourself time to recover after a massive project. You may be too enthusiastic about starting on another project, but learn to “stop and smell the roses.” It can surely benefit you to have some time off.
  6. In a digitally connected world, everyone is just hooked on their own iPhones, smartphones, and other gadgets. It rubs you off that needed energy for more critical tasks. Discipline yourself by allowing only a few minutes of checking on your social media accounts or playing the latest online games.
  7. Meet new people outside your usual crowd. This can give you a new perspective and inspire you to have fresh ideas.
  8. As much as possible, don’t take your work at home. It is senseless to come home earlier than usual, only to find you working until midnight at home. Resist having to work at home and instead take it as your way of making quality time with the family.
  9. Learn to balance everything so that you can be productive and at the same time build better relationships that can make you feel happy and fulfilled.

To attain success, one must possess different characteristics such as patience, perseverance, and persistence. However, we can only be effective with what we do if we are filled with inspiration and can see the positive things in life. It simply means that one needs to learn to have a “time out” from the busy world and give some quality time to themselves to become effective, productive, and eventually successful.
