Recognizing Time Management Slip-Ups

Most of you, I’m sure, would agree with me that they may feel that 24 hours in a day is not enough. Thus, we tend to work longer hours cramming, squeezing our brains off, and eventually neglect to have some time for ourselves and our families. Who should we blame? Our business may demand so much time because, after all, having a business means having to face a ton of work. And sometimes, you just don’t feel like there is a chance to take some rest.

Time is significant. In business, you need to create a timeline for doing things to act as your guide. Otherwise, you end up just completely wasting your time doing unnecessary things and making wrong decisions.

At least half of the startup businesses fail in the first five years. One of the most common failures that some entrepreneurs make is being unable to properly manage their time. Some would just be in the habit of thinking that everything would just fall into place (when the right time comes), or they miss out on certain things because they have overlooked a problem. And with that, it is likely to create one, a considerable problem that would take more time to solve.

Time Management Mistakes

Time management is essential because it allows us to have the freedom to enjoy the fruits of our labor. And also allows us enough time to do other things instead of being tied to one task. When our mind is bombarded with so many things, we tend to forget about time. And when that happens, so many problems may arise.

Avoid these time management mistakes and be able to create a stress-free day all the time.

  1. Not knowing what to prioritize. It will help you so much if you list the tasks you need to do for the day. Make two columns; on one side, write down “IMPORTANT” and on the other side “URGENT.” This allows you to do the urgent tasks first, followed by the rest, which you need to accomplish for the day. For functions, you would want to be done. Still, you think we are not as crucial for you to personally make them, you can always delegate them to any of your employees.
  2. In denial of having time management issues. You may seem that you have everything in your mind all the time. But, let’s face it. Due to so many problems that you have to face day in and day out, there is a possibility that you will miss out on something. And you’ll just realize that you have failed to do a specific task because you have spent so much time on other things. You can’t always complain that you lack enough time to do these things. Because honestly, if you had only realized that you have set out your priorities, you may have finished your work on time all the time without feeling stressed.

  1. Failure to have enough sleep. I am guilty of being overworked sometimes, especially if I have a presentation to make the following day. However, not having enough sleep could make you feel tired the next day. No matter how many cups of coffee you take in the morning, the energy of having an 8-hour sleep will never be the same. It also helps when you get to sleep in time, so you can wake up early as well. This way, you get things done earlier, and you can relax earlier, too.
  2. Taking up all the responsibilities. While being a hands-on business is ideal, it can also cause you to be more stressed. Your decision may be necessary all the time; however, you don’t need to do all the tasks personally. Learn to delegate. Choose the right people to do the job, so you don’t have to worry that the functions are not done on time. Again, throwing these tasks to just anybody is not the key to managing your time well. Be sure that you hire only the best people.
  3. Not having “free time” for yourself during the day. Remember that God created the world in 6 days and had a rest on the 7th day. This goes the same for each one of us. We cannot be working 24/7. Apart from not giving proper attention to our health, working too much can only lead us to making wrong decisions because of lack of rest/sleep. We tend to be grumpier, and just a slight noise may lead to an outburst which can scare away both employees and clients. During the day at the office, spare an hour or two for yourself. You may use the time in taking a nap or in doing meditation. This would not only help your body heal from all the stress but would also allow your mind to think clearer.
  4. Having a chaotic workplace. This goes to each and every one of us. How can you get things done on time when you need to search for the things you need? Always have a clean and orderly workplace so that you can find precisely the things that you need to use like pens, calculators, worksheets, contracts, etc. You waste an awful lot of time when you need a shovel or a rake to go through all the crumbled pieces of paper, take out containers, or pizza boxes sitting all over!
  5. Miscalculating time. Learn to estimate how much time you need for the tasks that you need to do. Sometimes, we fail to understand how tasking it could be for one job to be done. We tend to spend long hours and fall off short doing the rest. When this happens, we fail to create better decisions due to cramming. When bad decisions after bad decisions are made, it will harm the business.

Decision-making should not be rushed, or else the entrepreneur may not become prepared when problems arise. He should be able to not just make one solution to a problem but also create a backup plan just in case the first one did not transpire as expected.

Create a time management technique. An environment that will allow you to be inspired to work all the time. So that you recognize the most important things and have enough time to do them, and still come home on time to have dinner with your family.
