Re-aligning Goals vs. Reality

As young as a Grade school student, he/she may have dreams of becoming a doctor, pilot, nurse, teacher, or a businessman. And as the child grows up, there are factors which may affect his dreams of what he would want to become. A young mind will only have a vision of perfection. The concept of failure is not anywhere in his/her thoughts. It is because parents shield their children from pain, fear, and the truth. Their minds may not be able to fully understand the realities of life and they are better off seeing the world in vivid colors. Not until that child steps out of college and finds out what is really out there waiting for him

Just like being an entrepreneur, one starts into planning in which direction should he go to. Great ideas involve planning. Planning well is an essential factor for success.

Differentiating Dreams From Goals

These two words may seem identical. Dreams occupy your mind, while goals take over your reality. This means, dreaming is like having unrealistic vision of something. Example, you want to become the president of the Philippines. Although, there may be a slight chance of that becoming a reality, still, you need a lot of work to prove to the whole country that you are worthy of having the highest post in the country. If you just have this in mind and don’t do anything about it, then it will just remain as a dream.

Goals are visions on which one is inclined to do the necessary steps in order to attain it. Example, if your goal is to become a successful entrepreneur, you will do everything that you can in order to build a successful business. From equipping your mind with the right knowledge and mindset, it is not impossible to make this a reality.

Living By What You Believe In And Making It Work

Setting business goals should be realistic. Stick to a set of thoughts wherein every step that you have in mind is something that is truly possible to happen. Set benchmarks that are reachable without the need of any drastic measures. Therefore, every entrepreneur should set good goals. You, as an entrepreneur would dream of increasing your revenue through rapid expansion. This could be possible, but not in a blink of an eye. The reality of it is that things can happen at the right moment. If you would notice, sometimes, you have done everything that you could to make something happen and yet you still could not achieve what you want. Give it a deeper thought and check if you have missed anything. Setting far-fetched objectives may not be a way on how to achieve your goals for your business.

  1. Be smart in creating your plans. Set achievable goals. Here these may seem easy. Ask any seasoned entrepreneur and he will readily tell you that they had to go through the hole of a needle before they were able to reach their status. What did they do to overcome such? They made themselves worthy to be called as an entrepreneur. How? Continuous education has become a vital part of their entrepreneurial success. They never ceased learning new things that are paramount to their kind of business.
  2. Tracking your progress. There are business software programs which may be able to help you with this. While some claim that they are easy to use, still, you should be able to understand and interpret all the data that comes from it. You should not just be seeing an increase or decline in numbers. Each of the data represents something which is a queue on how you can improve or maintain a certain product or service that you have.
  3. Hiring of employees. You see a huge number of individuals seeking for employment and you readily hire the first few people that applies for the job you offered. It will not be a discrimination if you set a standard when qualifying employees. Years ago, employers were more focused on the educational background and skills of the applicant. But these days, knowing the soft skills are equally important.
  4. Launching your business. You put up an advertisement at each corner of the street where your business is and hope that people would just start rushing to your store. In a way, it can make people curious. But after the curiosity, they are expecting something grand… something that they would be interested to purchase. It is not about being ready to open because the store has been fully set-up. It is all about the products and services that you offer that you should focus on. The quality, the benefits over your competitors, price points, etc. These should be set clear all before opening the business.

It is sometimes so easy for us to say that everything is just a piece of cake. And that all that matters in building a business is having enough resources. However, that is not the reality of an entrepreneur. Facing everyday adversities should lead an entrepreneur to a way that he can have a better perspective of what lies ahead. Being optimistic about your business is okay. But, as I have mentioned earlier, always set your goals on a realistic note. Do not push yourself too hard on things that are clearly unachievable. If you think you might need help, never hesitate to ask someone for advice.
