A Blend of Purpose and Profit

You may have noticed that since the pandemic, there have been so many people who have gotten interested in starting their own business. The last 5 months have been truly a struggle to all of us. While all our eyes are towards our individual financial goals, I do think that these novice entrepreneurs should start seeing this opportunity from a different perspective. What I am saying is that, aside from aspiring to have better financial performance, business owners, should push to consider the interests of all their employees, customers, and the community, as a whole. This may not seem to be challenging, however, in doing so, this helps any entrepreneur to keep their mark in the industry.

What does having a social commitment do to a business? This creates both kinds of value into their core activities. An entrepreneur does not only create a good amount of profit, but, as well as, knowing that their stakeholders are being valued no matter what, builds a great foundation of the company. When shareholders and employees feel that they are part of a “family” they tend to participate more for the improvement of the business. It’s just like showing a child how much you care for them and they try really hard to do what is expected of them. The result is always a win-win situation – you mold the child so that he grows up to be a strong, wise, God-fearing individual in which parents would be honored for being able to rear a child and see him grow and pass on the lessons he has learned over the years. In business, there is always room to learn new things. Entrepreneurs have the responsibility to create an environment that is conducive to learning so that the end result does not only benefit the people involved, but the company, as well.

Companies should embrace a system that involves setting and monitoring social and financial goals, structuring and strengthening the organization to be able to pursue both, seeking employees who can see the same vision and be able to manage with both goals in mind. Money can and is the goal of most of us. However, this should not be the only goal when we build a business. There are other factors which we need to bear in mind all the time for us to become successful in any endeavor that we choose.

To become a great leader of an organization, there should be equal measures of discipline, creativity, objective and levelheadedness. Losing one or two of these factors will absolutely lead you to nowhere. So, why spend millions of pesos and so much time if you do not put your mind into the right mindset? Greediness and insensitivity will just pull any entrepreneur down the drain.

Times have become tougher. There should be no wasting time. Be practical and wise in making decisions for your business. Indeed, “instant” fame and fortune may be apparent to some, but if you are unaware on how to keep your business afloat, then you have just completely wasted your time.

Is there such thing as being able to create profit and purpose with the business that you have? Of course, there is. You need to work on it. But, you don’t have to be alone to do it. You layout all your plans and seek advice from people who may have more business experience than you.

Your Company and the Community

I always feel that I owe it to the people to give something back because I have been blessed for the past 28 years that I have been in business. You don’t need to announce to the whole world what you want to do. But, just a small gesture to share blessings to others. I have heard how some people react when a certain company would do something for others and quite frankly, this is an effective marketing strategy for any company. However, there are people who have a heart, too. And to offer something for the people who can benefit from it is more than just financial gain, but, for me, is a humbling experience.

There are purpose-driven companies whose goal was not to serve their products, but to serve the people. These companies believe that if they will treat their own people nicely, they would also treat their customers the same way. Customers always want to feel that they are being valued. A single satisfied customer could persuade at least 10 people and say positive feedback about their experience from that company. And what do you think will happen next? The word spreads around. It is the least expensive marketing stint which can help any company stay afloat. Companies should start embracing a higher purpose than merely eyeing on how much they could gain. It is like living a legacy which could stand for many generations to come – not just growing the business financially, but, also, taking care of the community.
