How To Manage Your Business Effectively Using Various Business Metrics
Topics: business growth, business management, business metrics, entrepreneur guide, performance tracking
Some entrepreneurs may have their eyes on their bank accounts alone and would be happy to see that it is somehow increasing every month. That will, of course, make any entrepreneur happy. However, the rise in the company’s revenue is not the only thing that an entrepreneur should be looking into. There are business metrics that entrepreneurs need to focus on to keep the business on the right track.
Suppose you are one of the new entrepreneurs. They just couldn’t stop smiling after realizing that the business was doing good just after a month of operation. In that case, I suggest that you could do a little more to make yourself even happier. You need to ensure that you stay on top. The process is really crucial. However, if your goal is to be successful, you need not complain.
Business Metrics that Entrepreneurs Should Keep An Eye On
Business metrics are a measure that businesses use to track, monitor, and assess the growth or failure of business processes. Its main goal is to follow cost management and to be able to communicate how a company progresses toward a specific period. This requires the business stakeholders to identify and discuss which among the metrics matter to them.
Sales Revenue. This is what entrepreneurs would be concerned about. No intelligent entrepreneur would start a business who would just let his time and money go down the drain without earning from the company he has just begun. However, it should be understood that the sales revenue is affected by various factors such as price changes, advertising campaigns, and seasonal changes. One classic example is how businesses boom during the Christmas season. Of course, people tend to spend more during the Holidays; therefore, the sales revenue of a particular company may multiply between 50%-100% (depending on the kind of products and services offered).
Employee productivity. It is recommended that employees are assessed at least every month. to determine who really works hard and help ensure that the company can produce the kind of quality expected from them. For sure, some employees may not be working as much as others, and I think it is vital to keep the people who are genuinely dedicated to their work. Similarly, you can be able to reward all deserving employees for boosting their morale.
Customer loyalty and retention. Who would avail your products/services if your company does not provide good customer service? What I mean is, sometimes, even though you have competitively priced products. Still, your employees do not treat your customers right. Customers are unlikely to come back or recommend your business to others. What you will gain are hateful customers who could spread negative publicity and could affect your business. Remember that it would cost a lot of money to clean your name. There are so many other businesses, which may be similar to yours, that others would instead go to. It could be helpful to hear from your customers to know about their experience with you. This will be a helpful guide on how you can improve your products and services.
Business Process and Documentation. The roles of each employee may evolve over time. And to simply provide them with new instructions may not be enough. Everything must be adequately documented. So that when the time comes, and some employees would be blackmailing you, you have documents to show how things have been done.
Employee Satisfaction. Companies just worry about how much money is coming into the business, without much thought about the employees. Entrepreneurs should know if the people working for them are still happy with what they do. An individual who doesn’t feel that his efforts are recognized or thinks that there seems to be no room for growth in the company may feel unmotivated and unproductive. Therefore, having time to talk to your employees and ask them how they are and if they still feel happy with their jobs is very important.
Evaluation of the Company’s Virtual Presence. The company website and its social media sites effectively let prospective clients, clients, prospective customers, customers, suppliers, etc., know about the company. The contents should be updated, and there should be dedicated people who can always reply to their queries. The digital world has such a significant effect on businesses today that about 90% of all consumers rely on customers’ experiences on social media sites.
IT Infrastructure. Regardless of how small the business can be, almost all businesses today are all tied to the digital infrastructure – from sales, logistics, marketing, management, and human resources. Companies should ensure that their digital infrastructure spend is not more than the revenue they earn. Therefore, tracking and managing this business metric is essential.
Net Profit Margin. It is the ability to determine the growth of your business. You must calculate the monthly revenue less the costs. To increase your payment, you may increase your price for the products you offer and sell more. To sell more would mean having to do some work – an improved ad campaign. Some companies would reduce the cost of their products without compromising quality. This would require thorough market research and an effective business strategy.
Website Traffic. A company’s website is not published online just to make a colorful display of a company. It tells what the company is all about and what it offers. When the website provides the information customers need, people would likely check on the site very often to see the latest products. Therefore, there is a need to have the website updated every so often to entice individuals. Thus, they will all convert into loyal customers from being mere prospects.
What key business metrics does your company keep track of? Make it a habit to check your business metrics frequently to avoid wasting your time and resources. Although you have people to help you with your business. You still need to know how your company is doing. based on the revenues, ensure that you don’t leave any stone unturned.
