Being an entrepreneur takes more than just being the “boss.”
It is always an honor to be invited to speak in front of a crowd, no matter how big or small they are. It is my chance to help others to understand what they should expect in starting their own business. This may be a lengthy discussion which I really don’t mind. From the outside, people may see it as a huge opportunity to earn from these aspiring entrepreneurs, but for me, more than the financial benefit is the fulfillment of a dream – to become an instrument to everyone’s success.
I often stress how an ideal entrepreneur should develop specific skills to climb the ladder of success. Through these skills, one may weigh down if the kind of business he has chosen is really something he wants to sustain. An entrepreneur must have a passion for business. Otherwise, the company will just crumble.
Being the boss of the company means taking on a lot of responsibilities. Regardless of the number of other people who work in every department, it is the entrepreneur’s responsibility to look into everything to ensure that the business operates smoothly.
An Overlooked Characteristic
If I ask you, what do you think is the most valuable skill that an entrepreneur should have, you may think of choosing one of the following:
There is actually a long list of skills that an entrepreneur is expected to have. It is pretty overwhelming, actually, but these are all needed if you want to sustain your business. However, despite all of these, there is one skill that some entrepreneurs may have overlooked- and that is empathy.
A compassionate entrepreneur allows his employees to value their jobs more.
What is empathy?
Empathy is the process of fostering the capability of understanding and appreciating feelings, thoughts, and experiences. Since entrepreneurship is about introducing various innovations in the community, it is only fitting that an entrepreneur should better understand what the community needs.
Empathy simply means having the ability to understand the feelings of another individual. I do expect that some entrepreneurs may raise their eyebrows when empathy is talked about. Because entrepreneurs are perceived as burdensome individuals, some may feel that there should be no room for the soft-hearted. For me, this is kind of a little bit cruel. Being raised a Catholic and in which I continue to have strong faith. I believe that when you see right through another person and understand why certain things happen. Which may sometimes be unavoidable; entrepreneurs should also have a forgiving heart.
I know that individuals take up a job merely for financial reasons in this day and age, and to say that they love their job may not be a typical response. I can’t blame these individuals since many employees are forced to take any job available to ensure that they can provide for their families. And to become picky about the kind of job given is a no-no. This is why entrepreneurs should be clear with their company’s mission and vision. Choosing the right people to do the job reduces the possibility of errors and failures.
The Role of Empathy in Business
The ability to see the world from other people’s perspectives is a challenge. But, it is something that entrepreneurs should face if he wants to become successful. So, what benefits can empathy bring to entrepreneurs?
Millennials on Empathy
We see millennials to be highly competitive. While they have characteristics, which traditional entrepreneurs may seem far-fetched, a small percentage of these millennials manifest their connection to their work. This means that most millennials would not stop for what is just presented to them at hand. They tend to seek new opportunities rather than stay and improve on what they are working on. Their dedication may be focused on finding a unique opportunity, but sticking with one may not always be possible. And so, with these, some millennials are perceived to be more prone to absenteeism, less productive, thus having lower profitability.
Doing all the benefits mentioned may not guarantee making a successful business unless one genuinely puts his heart into what he does. Making money as their only motivation to work will never be as effective as genuinely having an entire understanding of how others feel. It is essential that it becomes part of the company’s culture and lets everyone be valued. Therefore, creating a better connection with others makes one have a better perspective and a better relationship.
Looking into an individual’s needs is helpful because an entrepreneur gets to create a tailor-made solution. Remember that giving out financial rewards may not always be the best incentive to give an employee exemplary talent or skills. Ask team members what they like, instead. This means that you should not always impose financial rewards. Instead, think of other ways to boost every individual so that it can make a positive impact on your business.
Showing empathy is now showing weakness. It only shows that you value what others may feel and consider their feelings more than focusing on your own wants and needs before making a step.
