We all know that there will come a time when it makes sense to end something, possibly because of various reasons. As entrepreneurs, turning off the lights on your business may be brought about by an approaching retirement or looking for another opportunity. Finding the right buyer to take all the responsibility for the company you have built might seem an excellent decision.
Although you may know that it’s the right time to give up the business and sell it, it doesn’t mean that it can be done in a snap. There are tons of things that need to be considered – financial arrangement, the strategy of the new management, the welfare of the employees, etc. Aside from all these, it could also be highly emotional to just give up the business that you build from the ground up.
While some entrepreneurs may have wished to pass down the crown to a family member to take over the business, others would rather sell them and focus on their new endeavor.
Here are some of the most important things to consider before putting up your company for sale.
1. Be emotionally prepared. It’s hard to just suddenly stop waking up at 4:00 am every day and lay in bed until the sun is up. Something you have gotten used to for a long time. If selling the business means being able to spend more time with your family and jumping into the long-awaited opportunity, then you should consider taking that step. Indeed, it can never be an overnight decision. Some would have taken them years because it is just challenging to be no longer involved with something that has been part of your life for so long.
2. Finding the right time. How do you know it is the right time? You would want to sell when your business is on top since people interested in starting their own business want to see their money grow. It is unfortunate for some who would only consider selling their business when it has been downhill for some time. And realistically, who would buy a business that is losing the market?
3. You should look into how much it would make a difference in your life once you decide to step out of that tiny world you had for many years. I know some entrepreneurs chose to sell their business because they figured that the business had consumed so much of his time that he couldn’t be that “present” with his family. After the children had grown up and started living their own lives, he felt that it was time for him to spend more time with his wife and enjoy what he had worked hard for.
4. Knowing the value of your business. Your business must be valued accurately so that you can receive great offers.
5. To thoroughly think about why you want to sell. Are you selling because others said so? What others say should never influence you when making important decisions.
6. Know what a potential buyer wants. Selling your company is not as easy as handing out a piece of cake on a plate. You cannot force it on anyone. Consider seeking a consultant who can advise you on preparing your business for it to become appealing to potential buyers.
7. Identifying your financial prospects. Let’s say you have found a prospective buyer, but, of course, he would need to be sure that he is getting his money’s worth. And would not feel threatened that you might start another business similar to the one you are selling. That being said, he might let you sign a non-compete agreement. Would you be able to sit it out until such time the contract expires?
8. Knowing which step to take after the sale. It can be an emotional roller coaster ride when you finally have decided to sell your business. But have you already planned out what to do next? You must create a plan for spending your days after letting go of the business. Thus, the number one factor to consider is being emotionally prepared, as mentioned above. Make a plan for your future. Make sure that you put the money to good use. Remember, it took you years to build a successful business, and your family deserves a brighter and happier future.

What you earn from selling your business will change your life forever. That is why you need to think things through carefully so that you won’t need to blame yourself for losing the business you have loved. Ask yourself this: “Am I really ready to let go?”
