Valuable Tips on How To Become An Effective Leader
Topics: business management, company owner, employee motivation, franchise tips, leadership
We all have one main goal in life, which is to survive and sustain the needs of the family. Despite our having different roles, we are focused on pursuing our own dreams to have a better future. To quickly achieve any goal, one has to reflect on becoming a good person, first and foremost, and everything else follows.
Although some may think that an owner of a company need not worry about everything in the business. You may have been envious of another person’s success. But mind you, not everything is readily served on a silver platter. One needs to go through many challenges until perfection (at least, close to perfection) is achieved. You, being the boss of a company, must wear various hats to work. Since there are people who have been hired to do those tasks, to become successful in the industry, you must not leave any rock unturned and be the boss that knows the ins and outs of the business.
More than being called the boss or the leader or having that high-ranking title, you should be an effective leader to motivate your employees and reach your goals. These employees need someone they can look up to, put trust into, and be inspired even more to effectively do their jobs all the time.
Enhance communication. No relationship can survive without honest, good communication, and this also includes building a good relationship among your employees. Let your employees feel that you are someone that they can reach out to when they need you. Just make it clear that there are boundaries, as well. Some bosses may be the “funny guy” most of the time that his employees no longer see him as a boss, but just one of them would sometimes reach the point that the boss is no longer respected. Be clear with the message that you are there for them, but also always keep in mind that you are their boss.
Know your subordinates. All work and no play may make the relationship a bit stiff. And what better way to know your employees is by having some time out with them through company outings. When you do this, your employees may feel more confident to let out what they want to tell you. Not necessarily to open up their personal problems, but at least, they may think that their needs are also heard. Some bosses may be too strict to the point that employees no longer feel happy working for the company. Remember that some employees give up on their jobs not because of the kind of job or low salary they receive. It is also possible that the workplace becomes unbearable to be at.
Encourage your employees to speak their minds. As the owner of the company, you may have created a perfect plan for the next 5 years for the company. Keep in mind that there is also a possibility that your employees may also have a few ideas on how to improve the company’s services. Let them speak out and listen to what they have to say. Who knows, one of your employees may have concocted a really great idea which can work out for your company.
Focus on the good instead of on the bad. Naturally, mistakes are committed, or some situations are not expected to happen. But instead of being too discouraging with harsh words, which you may say, look at these challenges from a different perspective. Make something good out of it. There are times that these small mistakes are ways on how you can better improve. Refrain from making the workplace an uncomfortable place for your employees. When you burst with so much frustration, your employees feel discouraged. To give their all, even on the most minor things.
Be a living example. It is not enough to tell your employees to do this and become this and that. Although you are in control of the business, do not be too controlling. Let the employees have the freedom to be themselves so they can happily work for you. Again, when they do not feel stressed just hearing your voice, employees work more efficiently. Thus it provides a positive impact on your company.
Be clear but not harsh. You want to be understood all the time. Therefore, don’t leave your employees thinking about what you want them to do without clearly stating how you exactly want things to be done. Stop letting them guess what you think. Tell them what you want, when you want the things done. Provide positive feedback when an employee performs more than you have expected. If an employee happens to have some shortcomings, have a good talk with the employee. You will be amazed at the results when you look into the output.
Set goals. Let your employees know that they need to hit a specific target to know which direction to go. Make it a habit to have a monthly review of each employee’s performance so that you can recognize the exemplary implementations of deserving employees.
More than wanting to grow your business, never neglect the importance of building a good relationship with the people that work for you. You cannot always make things happen on your own. You need the help of others to become successful. After all, no man is an island.
