Is Christian-based Education Essential In Your Career and Workplace?

The Philippines is said to be the only Christian nation in Asia, having more than 86 percent of the population being Roman Catholic. Being a devout Catholic myself, I take pride in being one and I always strive to do things that are essentially according to the teaching of the church.

Education

Having been in the seminary has molded me in such a way that I have still kept everything that I have learned to this day. My life is not perfect, no one does. But, when making decisions, I do not only base it on how they are supposed to be, but also taking into consideration the possible repercussions. In doing this, I am able to reduce the risks of making huge mistakes, and at the same time, it has helped me build a solid foundation with regards to the relationship I have with the people around me.

Common Christian Teachings That Can Help in Business

I have realized that some of the teachings of the Church can be applied to the jobs that we have. The Church tells us to apply in our everyday lives what the Bible tells us. But, have you ever thought that most of these can be applied in our workplace, too?

  1. The Golden Rule, “Do not do unto others what you don’t want others to do unto you”. If you know this by heart, then I congratulate you because a person who abides by this teaching means that his love and compassion for others just overflows.

As an entrepreneur, you always want to be fair in all your dealings with your shareholders, employees, suppliers, and clients. Why? Because we need to gain their trust so that our business would become successful. Just imagine if one of your shareholders finds out that you are not declaring the right amount of revenue that you earn in a year. Do you think that the shareholder would just keep mum about it? I doubt. It’s either he pulls away or influences others to do the same.

  1. The Ten Commandments. I do believe that no one can ever be successful if he always puts himself above the others. The Ten Commandments is a set of moral duties in which all of us should be able to abide by. In business, our aim is to earn money from our hardships. And that means, doing it the right way wherein you focus on what you need to do without stepping on other’s feet. Even if you know it can be difficult to achieve your goal, there should be no reason for you to make a “short cut”.

Using the Ten Commandments as a Guide In Building a Business

“Thou shall not take the Lord’s name in vain.” Regardless of religion, an entrepreneur and/or his company should treat everyone equally. There are people who easily misjudge another person just because he belongs to another religion. But when you truly think about these different religious sects, they all have the same teachings. I don’t think there is a kind of religion that would teach people to do what is wrong. Therefore, to be fair and honest should always be among the priority of any entrepreneur.

“Remember to keep holy the Sabbath Day.” There may be times when an entrepreneur just feels that he needs to be in his office just to make sure that everything works according to how they are supposed to be. However, when an entrepreneur becomes so attached to his business, the relationship with his family suffers. There should always be a life-work balance, not just because you need to be physically present with your family, but because you also owe yourself some time to rest and enjoy so that you can go back to work energized and revitalized.

“Thou shall not kill”. You may not intend to kill a person. It means that an entrepreneur should make sure that he always prioritizes the safety of the employees in the workplace. There are incidents wherein accidents happen. An entrepreneur should at least provide immediate care by sending the injured employee to the hospital or provide first aid assistance for minor injuries. It’s all about having the conscience in keeping a safe environment for everyone.

“Thou shall not steal”. This may be rampant in some organizations wherein money just flows like water. But, I do believe that when the money does not come from something that is good and legal, it just goes away as quickly as it got in. No entrepreneur should aspire to get hold of so much money by involving in illegal activities. It does not only endanger himself, but as well as his family and employees.

“Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” In business, you can not always remain on top despite all your hard work. And when you fail, you should not blame others for it, as well. If one of your employees did commit a mistake, I suggest that you talk to the person in such a way that he can realize his mistakes and not to shout and endlessly curse the person. This often happens and it is not creating a good image for the company. Imagine yourself being a constant topic among the business community because you have become known to have such a huge temper to the point of putting people in shame in front of a large crowd. It is a huge turn-off to the market and to your shareholders. Nobody would want to be recognized as being related or in connection with such a person.

“Thou shall not covet thy neighbor’s house, wife, goods, etc.” Being in the business world may seem to be in a huge competition with so many. Never be envious of what others have achieved. There is always a right time for everything.  Instead of comparing yourself from others, focus on how you can become better as a person, as an entrepreneur and how you can make your products and services outstanding so that people will recognize you because of your own merits.

We need to focus on doing the right things in life because it is the only way on how we can achieve all our goals. Always make sure that through your journey, you will learn so much that in the end, you will value more what you have achieved.
