Changing The Culture To Adapt With The Modern Times

A set of principles, rules, and regulations, the shared values, belief systems, attitudes, and the collection of assumptions that shape each employee in a workplace.

A business handled by the second generation may realize that as they pursue their business, there are a lot of challenges that may come along. One of the major problems is how to increase their sales, mainly that there is stiff competition in the market these days. Some may just imitate an existing business. And be more successful than the business that has been replicated, primarily because the new company offers much better quality. Their marketing campaign can be just massive.

Second-generation entrepreneurs need to dissect the whole business. And to identify what has kept their business afloat for the past years. And how they can remain in the game for the next couple of years. What happens most of the time is that when the turnover to the new owners happens, a new system is suggested to take. Old employees only have one thing to do – to follow what is being instructed. Unfortunately, some of these employees may be hard-headed. They may complain about how it would be difficult for them to adjust since they have been following a system for years. Sounds familiar? I guess so.

Second Generation Entrepreneurs’ Dilemmas

Sustaining the business takes a lot of hard work. Which may make it hard for the co-owners and employees to survive. More than just wanting to increase revenue, an entrepreneur would like to maintain a work environment that would make it comfortable for everyone. But, with the changes in the administration, these can be a source of some issues.

There are many what-ifs, but one should have a good perspective to keep the operation flowing smoothly as an entrepreneur. Problems and challenges are all but part of any entrepreneur’s life. And he has to be always prepared to face them. Sometimes after overcoming one issue, another one may arise, and it can genuinely just make one crazy and give up. But, giving up means losing, and a strong entrepreneur cannot be easily turned down.

Handling a business that has been passed down means change. As time goes on, so are the customers’ demands, which are affected by the modernization of practically everything. One cannot just sit down and let things happen without putting some effort to step up. While this is for the company’s good, it may also mean some restraints on how employees would accept it because some of these old employees may just not be willing to make the changes.

The culture that these employees have gotten used to may be obsolete. And in these modern times, every business should be focused on upgrading their company. It is said that there are positions that may be eradicated because of the redundancy of work. There might also be a stricter implementation of rules that first-generation owners may not be too keen about.

If you have a millennial as a boss, you know what I am talking about. They want speed and quality all the time. And they may be a bit harsh. But, this is the result of being ambitious and wanting to be on top of the game.

A family business is a business in which two or more family members are involved. The majority of the ownership is controlled by the family.

The Success of the Family Business

You cannot just waste all the time and money your parents or grandparents spend when they hand you down the family business. Instinctively, one would make all things possible to sustain the business. Unless the second or third-generation members are not interested in such a company, there is nothing to do about it. But for those who are not giving up the fight, employees would just be ecstatic that they would still have a job.

These factors are needed for the success of the family business:

  1. Shared values, opinions, and goals. Every family member who is involved in the business must have the same vision. Should there be some difference in opinions (which is not unlikely to happen), it should be professionally discussed and should not reach to attacking personally.
  2. Clear expectations of roles and participation of each family member. Although it is a family business, there should be appointed persons who will handle a particular department. Only those assigned to such a department will be accountable for their own. Although this should be an agreement, it should also be known that anyone is open to speaking his mind. If he sees that some things need to be corrected or eradicated.
  3. Making use of resources wisely. When we talk about resources, this refers to how the money is spent, choosing the right people to do the job, and taking advantage of the technology available to improve the business.
  4. Participation of outsiders such as advisors and investors. As the business age, there may also be the need to expand, remarkably if the demand increases. And along with this, there might be some changes that need to be adopted. To ensure that the company can deliver what is expected from them. Advisors are required to act as a guide in ensuring that the business is going north. and should be able to foresee any issues that may come along the way. So that solutions may be provided or come up with ways to avoid them. On the other hand, the investors are needed for sustaining the expansion of the business.
  5. Resolving conflict properly. Business is business. Anything personal issues should be put aside. Each family member should understand that they need one another to make the business successful and never let personal matters ruin their relationship.

Re-energizing the Unmotivated Employees

Old employees would likely want to hang on to what they have been used to. For so many years, they have followed the same rules, regulations, and principles that they have learned by heart. But unfortunately, as time goes by, some of these rules may no longer be as effective because of the changing times and demands of the market. With that being said, the business owners would not just sit down and do nothing about it. And that is when the problem starts to ensue.

  1. Make it clear to the employees that the changes are for the good of everyone. The difference should be taken from a positive perspective because it means improvement.
  2. Efficiency is essential in any business. Anyone who may be doing less as expected should anticipate facing sanctions. Now, this does not mean hitting them with an iron belt, but rather changing their mindset and work ethics.
  3. Reward employees who are giving their best. It may not be monetary, but just acknowledging them as the “Employee of the Week” or “Employee of the Month” can boost their morale.
  4. Give time to know your employees. Hold team-building activities to strengthen their bond to feel that they belong to a single community.
  5. Depending on the kind of business you have, you may adjust the schedule of some workers who do not need to work as early as 8 am. Just let them know that they need to complete the required number of hours per day and provide the same expected output each time.
  6. Make it a habit to share positive feedback. A simple gesture can brighten the day of your employee. People want to feel that they are essential and acknowledged for their work.

Change is inevitable. However, not everyone is happy about it. It may not be too welcoming in the workplace, where the company is run by a second-generation entrepreneur. But, if this entrepreneur would present the idea of change as something that could make everyone better and earn the company more significant, it should be a great motivation for everyone.
